REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and restriction of Chemicals) is a EU regulation adopted to improve the protection of human health and the environment from the risks that can be posed by chemicals. Under REACH, starting June 1, 2018, all “chemical substances” manufactured and marketed in EU over 1 ton will have to be registered with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). The textile and paper chemical products available on the EU market are mainly formulations of several substances. REACH obligations applies to each individual ingredient of a commercial formulation.
Companies who manufacture or import a chemical substance in the EU are responsible for registering it under REACH. Substances are being registered by consortia of producers or importers, with a “lead registrant” company leading each “registration dossier”.
Most lead registrants such as Archroma are prominent producers who have both the high-level chemical expertise and financial capability required to register one or several substances.
With its expert chemical management system, Archroma, unlike many EU importers of textile and paper chemicals, controls the composition of its formulations and can therefore ensure full REACH compliance of each ingredients of its products.
It is possible to join an existing registration by contributing to the toxicological/eco-toxicological test package and administrative costs, but of course that means that there must be a registration completed on time for the June 1, 2018 deadline.
Companies who have not registered products that fall under REACH regulation or joined a registration on time, will not be allowed to sell them in the EU from June 1, 2018, leading to supply disruptions for these products.
If their products fall under REACH regulation, it is critical that your supplier joins a registration that can be completed before June 1, 2018 for that substance.
If no registration was started yet, a new dossier introduced just now may probably not be completed by June 1, 2018. The timeline is clearly becoming challenging and you may face a supply disruption from your supplier or importer.
As part of our commitment to support our customer as a reliable supplier, we engaged into preparing for REACH from the very early stages back in 2007. In total, Archroma will register 369 substances before the June 1st, 2018 deadline, 135 as lead registrant and funding company in the most relevant consortia for textile and paper industry (Dyes, OBA, Fluorotelomer…). This represents 14.5 million USD investment.
We are well on schedule to meet the June 1, 2018 deadline. When buying from Archroma, you can count on a reliable supply source and an expert partner to accompany you through the REACH process.
