A breakthrough sustainability service: One Way

Archroma’s ONE WAY, introduced in October 2012, helps mills and brand owners to develop innovative textile solutions that are both more ecologically and economically sustainable. Our ultimate aim is to provide a fast, measurable and reliable approach to the selection of chemical product and process solutions. ONE WAY METHODOLOGY AND TOOLBOX To help customers meet their sustainability targets in a fast and reliable manner, the ONE WAY methodology takes a highly systematic approach to the selection of chemicals and production processes.

Step 1: Product Selection

All ONE WAY dyes and chemicals can be almost instantly screened by Archroma’s product stewardship specialists against more than 15 textiles eco-standards and criteria, including:

  • bluesign®1
  • OekoTex®2
  • GOTS3
  • All of the major Restricted Substances Lists (RSLs)
  • Other relevant criteria, such as high bioelimination.

This unique data has been integrated in the ONE WAY Selector, which allows instant information access on how each ONE WAY product scores in terms of toxicological and ecological profile and standards. Over 200 products have been selected and already integrated, and ultimately the entire Archroma’s textile dyes and chemicals portfolio will be added in order to cover our customers’ needs from fiber to finish.

In addition, Archroma added its portfolio of ZDHC MRSL-compliant chemicals and dyes to the ONE WAY Sustainability Calculator (see under step 3). This allows the time-saving advantage of being able to pre-select products at an early stage in their selection process.

Step 2: Process Short-Listing

Textile manufacturers often have to cope with limitations imposed on their manufacturing operations, whether by local or industry regulations or simply by the local availability of resources.

With the ONE WAY Process Cluster, customers can now further narrow down their selection of potential products to one of four process groups, based on their environmental focus: Climate: Indicated by CO2 emissions; Resource: Indicated by savings in water, energy and time consumption; Waste water: Indicated by the volume of waste water, and others.

Step 3: Solution Selection

Archroma has developed a sophisticated software, the ONE WAY Calculator, that enables ONE WAY team members to assess the cost, performance and environmental profile of ONE WAY products almost instantly.

ONE WAY provides a sophisticated tool with precise data measurement and analysis for brand owners to accurately compare the resource savings or CO2 emissions of different processes. The ONE WAY Calculator provides instant information for customers to make informed decision based on measureable indicators. The measurements made possible with the ONE WAY Calculator include:

  • The cost and performance profile of a given production process, based on relevant parameters such as dyes and chemicals, water, energy, or time;
  • Environmental profile based on actual measurements of chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD), CO2 emissions, energy consumption, and water usage.

In addition, Archroma added its portfolio of ZDHC MRSL-compliant chemicals and dyes to the ONE WAY Sustainability Calculator. This allows the time-saving advantage of being able to pre-select products at an early stage in their selection process.

After all three steps of the ONE WAY methodology have been completed, the customer will receive a ONE WAY Score Card with all calculation results based on a set of key indicators. Case Example: Assessing Archroma’s Blue Magic against a benchmark exhaust bleaching process Archroma’s Blue Magic is an all-in-one bleaching auxiliary based on Imerol® Blue. Beside its advanced brightening effect, Blue Magic adds up to higher productivity, simplified handling, better uniformity and improved dyeability with less impact on the environment compared to conventional process. When assessed against a benchmark exhaust bleaching process, Archroma’s Blue Magic all-in-one bleaching process, with Imerol® Blue, brings substantial improvements in terms of productivity, as well as reduced water and energy consumption.
