Taking action: Archroma's path towards a plastic-free future on World Environment Day

05/06/2023

The world is being inundated by plastic. More than 400 million tonnes of plastic are produced every year, half of which are designed to be used only once. Of that, less than 10 per cent is recycled. An estimated 19-23 million tonnes end up in lakes, rivers, and seas. Today, plastic clogs our landfills, leaches into the ocean and is combusted into toxic smoke, making it one of the gravest threats to the planet.

Not only that, what is less known is that microplastics find their way into the food we eat, the water we drink and even the air we breathe. Many plastic products contain hazardous additives, which may pose a threat to our health.

For us at Archroma, a leading global provider of specialty chemicals, this day holds special significance as we strive to transform the paper industry into a more sustainable and eco-friendlier sector. With our unwavering commitment to environmental responsibility, we aim to drive positive change and inspire others to join us in protecting our planet for future generations.

That is why we are proud to have launched several solutions with the singular purpose of reducing plastic use and move towards a plastic-free future.

Without chemistry we wouldn’t have packaging at all — sustainable or otherwise. Yet, the role of chemistry in packaging is often unacknowledged, even by seasoned packaging professionals. This article explores the role of chemistry, both as an integral part of every package, and as the driving force behind true circularity in this sector.

From Pulp to Package, Package to Pulp (and back again)

The paperization trend in modern packaging has many drivers: regulatory developments, growing environmental awareness, changing consumer sentiment — all these, and more, contribute to its increasing relevance. Fully realizing its potential involves overcoming multiple practical challenges, and packaging producers need partners who understand what happens at every step of the value chain loop.
